Wiki 10 - Home Chemistry Hurumanu

Kia ora koutou.

This week we are excited to begin a new Hurumanu which is Home Chemistry.  Students will have
the opportunity to earn science badges which is really exciting!

We will be conducting a range of scientific investigations using all kinds of ingredients that you can find in your kitchen at home!

We will also be using our procedural writing skills to record all of the details from our experiments and activities. Next we will be using our explanation writing skills to explain what we have been doing to our audience on our blogs. Finally, we will be reflecting on our learning and identifying what our next steps are.
When we have included all of these details in our blogs we may have the chance to earn points towards our science badges.

Blogging expectations are high for this hurumanu, check out Miss Birtch's class blog to find out what is required...

Wiki 4 - What's been happening in week 4

Kia ora koutou and welcome to week 4 of term 1 in 7 and 8Ds.

We have had a really busy week this week with the introduction of Community Impact Projects on Wednesday.

What are Community Impact Projects? Well this is an opportunity for the year 7 and 8 students and teachers at Hornby High School to give something back to the community. Our class is part of the Community Promotions Team and we are currently inquiring into some really important questions such as: What is a community? Who are the groups in our school and what do they do? Who can we go to for help in our school if we have a problem or a question? We will use these answers to help us work out what we can do in our community to make positive changes, watch this space....

Another part of our Community Impacts Projects day is the opportunity for rangatahi to join passion groups such as: dancing; singing; rugby academy; basketball coaching; Eco Warriors; student council; ambassadors and the health promotions team which is really awesome!
Whaea Raewyn is taking the singing group and we will be  performing at the Kids 4 Kids concert in November this year.

Check out this amazing piece of artwork that we have created together. We have displayed it proudly on our wall:

The artwork is based on a whakataukī which is all about us working together as a whānau rather than as individuals:

Ehara taku toa I te toa takitahi, he toa takitini.
My strength is not as an individual, but it is a collective.

We have also been working on goal setting, every student has chosen three goals to focus on this term, they relate to our Year 8 Graduate Profile - you can view the link to this here: Link
